Sarah Powell is a Co-PI on a new project, Young Academic Music and Computational Thinking for Kindergarten. The project received a $1.4 million grant over three years from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement. Powell is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education.
The team hopes to improve math, music, and computational thinking in kindergarten through a series of field-based activities. They will pilot the program by working in Texas classrooms to understand what works and what is challenging for teachers who have little training in music and technology.
The project is led by Sue Courey from the Graduate School of Education at Touro College in New York. Powell is a Co-PI along with personnel from Daniel’s Music Foundation, The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, SRI International, and WestEd.
